IELELE
-Halloween Special-
Ielele are feminine mythical creatures in Romanian mythology. There are several different descriptions of their characteristics. Often they are described as virgin fairies, with great seductive power over men, with magical skills and attributes similar to Nymphs, Naiads and Dryads found in Greek mythology.
Ielele are visible only by night, when they enjoy dancing in soft, translucent dresses that reveal their bodies, with their loose hair, crystal-like voices, and a beauty that is hard to describe in words. Deemed the true goddesses of the woods, their origin story has caused a hot debate among historians and folklorists.
To please them, people dedicated festival days to them; such as Rusaliile, the Stratul etc. Anyone not respecting these holidays was said to suffer their revenge.
Legend says that whoever answers to the Ielele’s song, remains speechless. Ielele are considered some of the most feared fantastic creatures in the romanian folklore.
